Altair Advanced Industries, Inc., a member of the Alpha Group, which provides world-class powering solutions, seeks an International Trade Compliance Specialist to join their team in Bellingham, WA.


Monitor International Trade Compliance processes and policies across the Alpha Group’s various departments and divisions.  Insure that compliance policies and processes meet regulations and that trade compliance is efficient and accurate


• Create and update an import and export compliance manual to initiate and monitor processes to insure compliance with international regulation

• Initiate the review, development, and implementation of US Import and Export compliance procedures, training and guidelines

• Serve as an escalation point and provide guidance to all departments or divisions with questions or issues regarding customs compliance, international documentation requirements, INCO terms, and customs clearance

• Maintain the accuracy of HTS codes, ECCN requirements to include EAR99, and trade agreement designations

• Monitor and audit all compliance records, trafficking fields and vendor data within SAP and the accurate execution of this data by our customs brokers

• Propose SAP enhancements to improve accuracy and efficiencies within SAP

• Collect and track metrics to include lead time performance for denied parties screening clearance

• Create a best practices manual and boiler plates to improve efficiency and the accurate execution of international compliance regulations

• Assist in implementation of corrective action recommendations for non-compliance of any international laws or regulations

• Monitor execution and continuous improvement of the standard operating procedure with the corporate customs broker

• Explore duty savings opportunities with customs to include duty draw back, GSP, Trade Agreements, and proposed HTS Binding Rulings to correct unfavorable designations

• Monitor compliance regulations for both the US and Canadian customs to ensure potential problems are avoided and regulation changes are evaluated for impact on the company    

Additional Responsibilities may include:

• Work with staff to prepare customs and freight documents

• Verify the staff administers duty drawback claims and damage claims on a timely basis

Requirements and Skills:

Education:  High School Diploma or equivalent in field of business, engineering or logistics   

Experience:  2 – 4 years in related field, business, engineering or logistics

• Ability to meet expected 100% attendance requirement

• Will work on-site (no tele-commuting)

• Ability to follow written and verbal directions in the English language

• Ability to speak/read/write English

• Detail oriented

• Strong organizational skills

• Work well under pressure

• Current driver’s license and acceptable driving record

• Sufficient credit line for business expenses

• Available weekends and after hours when on call

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to motivate cross-functional team and work in matrix organization

• Capable of presenting strategic initiatives to management

• Professional demeanor, team player orientation

• Ability to interface with internal/external partners at all levels

• Ability to deal with customers with a strong degree of technical competence
