AlphaNet™ DM3 Series Transponder Installer Certification

AlphaNet™ DM3 Series Transponder Installer Certification

This course assists the technician in successful installation and setup of the DM3 series transponder. Topics include:

  • Determining the preparation required for field installations of DM3 series transponders
  • Safely and successfully installing and setting up a DM3 series transponder into the power supply, making front panel connections and verifying the operation of the device
  • Determining the correct power supply and transponder setting options
  • Accessing the AlphaNet™ DM3.0 transponder quick start guide as an additional resource
  • Completing all steps without additional assistance

    RF Theory and Troubleshooting

    RF Theory and Troubleshooting

The RF Theory course discusses the properties of coaxial cable and RF signal attenuation at different frequencies before moving onto how RF signals are distributed, HFC network topologies, unity gain and its relationship to the placement of amplifiers. Digital modulation of RF signals is described in the context of using constellation diagrams to identify and then troubleshoot signal impairments. Topics include:

    • Describing how RF signals are transported to and from customers over the outside plant and explaining the impact of the “funnel effect” in the return path
    • Identifying network topologies and the location and roles of nodes and amplifiers in maintaining unity gain
    • Describing how the “skin effect” and the properties of hardline cable produce tilt and impact signal quality
    • Describing multiple modulation techniques for encoding data and reading constellation diagrams to identify signal impairments

    AC Power

    AC Power

The AC Power course discusses how utility power is generated and transported to the HFC plant where a power supply conditions the power to another voltage and waveform. Distribution of AC power through the HFC network is described and the user learns how to identify power supply locations on network maps. The user then applies Ohm’s law to calculate the voltage going into nodes and amplifiers. Topics include:

    • Explaining how utility power is generated, transmitted and distributed to drive HFC outside plant electronics
    • Describing the role of standby power supply and how to safely maintain it
    • Calculating voltage drops and troubleshooting problems in the outside plant
    • Using system maps to quickly locate power supplies in the field

    Electrical Safety - Outside Plant

    Electrical Safety - Outside Plant

The Electrical Safety – Outside Plant course reminds employees of the electrical hazards that they could be exposed to while working in the network. In broadband cable networks, the fiber and coaxial cable is typically only inches away from the power company’s electrical lines. Safety codes and construction practices have been developed and adopted to ensure safe coexistence on the poles, in the trenches and at the customer premises. Topics include:

    • Identifying electrical hazards when working in the outside plant
    • Recognizing the importance of electrical safety
    • Learning the difference between certain types of lightning strikes
    • Recognizing the importance of why the human body is an imperfect conductor
    • Conducting safe practice when working in and around live wires
    • Distinguishing AC from DC current hazards
    • Recognizing risks of improper grounding and bonding
    • Adhering to safety practices when working with underground plant, electrical equipment and components
